2020 NBA Mock Draft 2.0

1.       Minnesota Timberwolves: Anthony Edwards

Age: 19

School/ Team: Georgia, Freshman

Height: 6’5”

Weight: 225 lbs

Position: Guard

Analysis: Still picking Edwards for the first selection in the draft because his upside is as high as anyone in the draft. The Timberwolves might be blowing smoke about LaMelo Ball to leverage a trade. Anthony Edwards can fit better than the other consensus top three (Edwards, Ball and Wiseman) while carrying tremendous upside.

2.       Golden State Warriors (Trade to New York Knicks): LaMelo Ball

Age: 19

School/ Team: Illawarra (NBL)

Height: 6’7”

Weight: 181 lbs

Position: Guard

Trade Details: Warriors trade 2020 first round pick (2nd overall), 2021 Nuggets second round pick, and Jordan Poole to the Knicks for 2020 first round pick (8th overall), 2021 Mavericks first round pick, 2021 Hornets second round pick, and Mitchell Robinson

Analysis: This trade remains possible for the Knicks given the unique situation for the Warriors. The one asset the Knicks may need to include but will not want to give up is their own first round selection in 2021. As for the pick, LaMelo Ball is the playmaker the Knicks need to take a chance on.

3.       Charlotte Hornets: James Wiseman

Age: 19

School/ Team: Memphis, Freshman

Height: 7’1”

Weight: 235 lbs

Position: Center

Analysis: This is a difficult and important pick for the Charlotte Hornets. The Hornets will be looking for a trade to move back two or three spots in hopes of landing either Wiseman or Okongwu. The Hornets value both centers and might want to accumulate more picks for the rebuilding team. However, the pick is Wiseman due to his incredible frame and star-power potential the Hornets desperately need.

4.       Chicago Bulls: Tyrese Haliburton

Age: 20

School/ Team: Iowa State, Sophomore

Height: 6’5”

Weight: 175 lbs

Position: Guard

Analysis: Haliburton is a high character prospect with a great motor. This is the type of player the Bulls need to balance their roster. Haliburton provides two-way guard play that can help make up for the poor defensive play from the incumbent guards. The thin frame of Tyrese could be a concern; however, most players tend to fill out upon arrival to the NBA.

5.       Cleveland Cavaliers: Onyeka Okongwu

Age: 18

School/ Team: USC, Freshman

Height: 6’9”

Weight: 245 lbs

Position: Forward

Analysis: Looking at the Cavs current roster almost any position is of need. Okongwu projects to have the upside of long-term starter potential and can develop behind Drummond and Love. Onyeka also provides the unique upside of being a stretch big.

6.       Atlanta Hawks: Isaac Okoro

Age: 19

School/ Team: Auburn, Freshman

Height: 6’6”

Weight: 225 lbs

Position: Forward

Analysis: Okoro projects to be a high level on ball defender with excellent size and length. Okoro has underrated athleticism with sub-par playmaking and shooting. If Okoro improves his shooting, he will fit perfectly alongside Trae Young.

7.       Detroit Pistons: Killian Hayes

Age: 19

School/ Team: Ulm (Bundesliga)

Height: 6’4”

Weight: 216 lbs

Position: Guard

Analysis: The Pistons are a rebuilding team that desperately needs a lead ball-handler. Hayes provides the upside of an All-Star lead guard and is a value at the seventh pick. The Cavs could influence the Pistons to trade up by making noise for Hayes. As for the fit, Hayes playmaking and long frame can fit at either guard position.

8.       New York Knicks (Trade to Golden State Warriors): Obi Toppin

Age: 22

School/ Team: Dayton, Sophomore

Height: 6’9”

Weight: 220 lbs

Position: Forward

Analysis: Toppin is a great value here for the Warriors as they are getting a more polished offensive player. Toppin provides length defensively and shooting offensively. This combination of ability could make the Warriors a favorite for the title.

9.       Washington Wizards: Patrick Williams

Age: 19

School/ Team: Florida State, Freshman

Height: 6’8”

Weight: 225 lbs

Position: Forward

Analysis: Williams has the best combination of athleticism and size left in the draft. The high upside is why the Wizards make this pick. His explosiveness will pair well alongside Wall and Beal. The Wizards will look to trade up for Onyeka Okongwu, but the price might be too high.

10.   Phoenix Suns: Devin Vassell

Age: 20

School/ Team: Florida State, Sophomore

Height: 6’6”

Weight: 180 lbs

Position: Forward

Analysis: Two Florida State players selected in a row. Vassell projects to be a two-way wing with great length and defensive IQ. Vassell’s upside is dependent on how his shot progresses. If he can become a knockdown shooter, he could become a perennial All-Star.

11.   San Antonio Spurs: Deni Avdija

Age: 19

School/ Team: Maccabi Tel Aviv (IPL)

Height: 6’9”

Weight: 210 lbs

Position: Forward

Analysis: Amidst the Spurs rebuild, they must look for high upside players. Avdija’s offensive potential is what makes this the pick for San Antonio. The major skepticism is his defense and if he will be able to shoot. If the Spurs believe in their development, this could be a homerun pick.

12.   Sacramento Kings: Aaron Nesmith

Age: 20

School/ Team: Vanderbilt, Sophomore

Height: 6’6”

Weight: 213 lbs

Position: Forward

Analysis: Nesmith projects to be a capable shooter and defender at the NBA level. Many around the league consider him the best shooter in this class. The Kings should be extremely excited if they are able to draft a versatile wing with high upside shooting the basketball.

13.   New Orleans Pelicans: Saddiq Bey

Age: 21

School/ Team: Villanova, Junior

Height: 6’8”

Weight: 216 lbs

Position: Forward

Analysis: The Pelicans have a few options with this pick. Primarily, the Pelicans would want to package this pick and Jrue Holliday for Andrew Wiggins and the second pick. The options for drafting in this position are combo-guards, 3 and D wings or a rim-protector. Maxey and Kira Lewis Jr. are interesting here especially if the Pelicans plan on not resigning Jrue. If Jrue is in the Pelicans future, I expect them to select either Saddiq Bey or Jalen Smith. This decision depends on the Pelicans view of Jaxson Hayes. I anticipate the Pelicans will want to give Hayes minutes and go with the 3 and D profile for Saddiq.

14.   Boston Celtics (Trade to Dallas Mavericks): RJ Hampton

Age: 19

School/ Team: New Zealand Breakers (NBL)

Height: 6’5”

Weight: 188 lbs

Position: Guard

Trade Details: Celtics trade 2020 first round pick (14th overall), 2020 first round pick (26th overall), Enes Kanter, and Romeo Langford to the Mavericks for 2020 first round pick (18th overall), 2025 first round pick, and Delon Wright

Analysis: In this trade the Celtics package two picks and cap space for an upgrade at backup guard. The Mavericks get their guy by trading into the lottery. Hampton has the athleticism to thrive next to Luka in this offense. With improvements to Hampton’s shooting, he could become a high-level scorer in the NBA.

15.   Orlando Magic: Kira Lewis Jr.

Age: 19

School/ Team: Alabama, Sophomore

Height: 6’3”

Weight: 165 lbs

Position: Guard

16.   Portland Trail Blazers: Precious Achiuwa

Age: 20

School/ Team: Memphis, Freshman

Height: 6’9”

Weight: 225 lbs

Position: Forward

Age: 18

School/ Team: Olympiacos Piraeus (EuroLeague)

Height: 7’0”

Weight: 195 lbs

Position: Forward

18.   Dallas Mavericks (Trade to Boston Celtics): Tyrese Maxey

Age: 19

School/ Team: Kentucky, Freshman

Height: 6’3”

Weight: 198 lbs

Position: Guard

Weight: 190 lbs

Position: Guard
